The commission to design a new grandstand in Cartmel was awarded after winning an architectural competition. The client, Cartmel Steeplechases (Holker) Ltd, were keen to see the existing outdated structure replaced with a new building. The Grandstand provides vastly improved facilities for race goers, owners, trainers, jockeys and Aintree management. Attention to detail and achieving a very tight timescale were of paramount importance. Set into the conservation area of Cartmel the design philosophy was to create a modern building reflecting the character and heritage of the historic village, using local stone and Burlington slate.
The Grandstand was a much needed addition to the racing venue.
The facility is very popular for all kinds of corporate events and weddings as well as being the focal point for the race meetings.
The viewing tower and spectator gallery offer excellent views of the course.
